Our Mauritius Island Retreat
Lion chasing, elephant encircling and bush driving can be hard work. Naturally, we needed some beach time after all that intensity from our safari to unwind. On the other side of Madagascar lies a small island with an Indian culture called Mauritius. While hot and humid make some people grimace, the thought of 90 degree weather, humidity and beaches could make me go weak at the knees.
The plan for this leg of the trip was…..well, nothing. There was absolutely no plan for the next several days except to sit on a beach and soak in the sun. We were shocked at the high prices of the island, so we found a grocery store and relied on making our own sandwiches and rum and cokes for the remainder of the trip.
In the next few days, I easily finished my several hundred page book, got a good tan and went SCUBA diving. The only hard part about being in Mauritius was that it was actually Christmas while we were there. Naturally, one may think “Poor you. Spending Christmas on a beach.” But I have to admit that this was the hardest Christmas I have had to date. It was difficult seeing pictures of my family all together and reading about the fun they were all having together while I was a whole world away. Luckily, I have an amazing husband who was there for me and it really is amazing how the power of peaceful ocean water can give you a sense of calm when the sun came up the next day.
Christmas morning, I reminded myself how fortunate I was to be gazing out into the ocean, feet buried into the sand and wished (as I always do when on a beach) that I had just a few more days in paradise.
