Edelweiss Lodge and Resort vs Army Lodging
For military members stationed in Germany, Edelweiss Lodge and Resort, located in the stunning Alpine village of Garmisch, is a much-sought after retreat area.
Edelweiss Lodge is indeed a beautiful getaway. In order stay at the resort, you must be a military ID card holder to gain access to the Army Post that it is located on. As long as you have a military ID, you can stay at the lodge, but prices will vary depending on one’s rank and possible specials going on at the time. These prices can range from around $70 to over $100. When I think “resort” I often also think “all-inclusive” or at least “semi-inclusive.” However, unless there is a promotion running, often times breakfast isn’t even included in the nightly rate.
I was not about to pay $100 a night for a bed and some nice alpine lodge ambience! So, it was time to travel hack!
After doing some digging and getting tipped off by a co-worker whose wife worked at the Army Post Lodging, we decided to save some big bucks and stay at the lodging instead of the resort. Here’s the breakdown of both options

Bottom Line: Unless you have booked with a marriage retreat or with a special, you can pay almost HALF the price to stay right next door and receive all the same amenities as the “resort” (ask for the location next to Edelweiss, as there is another location on the Artillery Kaserne, which is on the other “side” of post).
Some people want the rustic and romantic appeal of Edelweiss, but I much prefer the appeal of saving money! (My gal pal, Jennifer over at Royal Little Lambs goes into detail about how great the resort is though here. Check out her review to compare) Besides, when surrounded by gorgeous scenery, I don’t care what the inside of my hotel looks like! With the knowledge that I can use all the same amenities as those staying at the resort, I’ll save that $40-50/night and spend it on something awesome…like paragliding over Neuschwanstein!
